Why do a Borussia Dortmund soccer camp ?

Borussia Dortmund is a club that has a very special relationship with its fans. They have the highest average attendance for their games, and incredibly, it is over 80,000. They have won the Bundesliga five times, and even managed to defeat Juventus in 1997 to lift the Champions League trophy.

At Borussia Dortmund’s home games, the Yellow Wall appears. The fans in the south stand are raucous throughout the match, intimidating opposition teams and willing the Dortmund players on. It has become famous in the soccer world for the intensity of the fan’s support and for the incredible sight that it is.

Dortmund very often play attacking, attractive soccer, which makes the Yellow Wall bellow harder. Dortmund is a club that is mostly owned by the fans, the stadium comes alive thanks to the fans and the players on the field are playing for the fans. It is how a soccer club should work.

The Jurgen Klopp era of Borussia Dortmund

In 2008, Jurgen Klopp was picked to be the new Borussia Dortmund manager. He won a trophy in his first year but still only managed to finish sixth in the league. Two years later however, in 2011, Klopp and his team were celebrating winning the title, with the youngest team ever to do it. The next year, they won the league and cup double.

Dortmund were so good because of how energetic they were. The team only had one mode : full speed. When they had the ball, they would attack. When they did not have the ball, they would relentlessly hunt it down, in a technique that is now called Gegenpressing. It requires lots of fitness, but as Klopp showed, it could be utterly unstoppable.
