Why do an Ajax soccer camp ?
Ajax Amsterdam are a legendary club. By far the most dominant team in the Netherlands, they have won an incredible 34 league titles, 11 more than their next contender, PSV Eindhoven. They are also one of only five teams to have been allowed to keep a Champions League trophy, thanks to winning it three times in a row. They are in very good company, as the other four clubs are Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
Ajax are a club that have massively contributed to world soccer. One way in which they did that is through “Total Football”. Total Football was what the Ajax team played in the early 1970s. Basically, no player had a fixed position and they were expected to play anywhere. This made the team extremely fluid and a total nightmare for the opposition, who would have no idea who to pick up when defending. With this system, Ajax had two perfect seasons in a row : 46 wins in 46 matches !
Ajax, a club with truly great players
Over the years, some of the world’s very best players have lined up for the Dutch side. Edwin Van de Sar is probably the best goalkeeper to play for the club. Tall and athletic, he had cat-like reflexes which helped him deny some great chances. Dennis Bergkamp, famous for being an Invincible, spent seven years at the club. His versatility and technical ability were phenomenal, and he was a striker’s dream because of his incredible interplay.
However, there is one Ajax player that stands head and shoulders above the rest. It is of course Johan Cruyff. This man won countless individual award, was voted European Player of the Century and even invented his very own skill move : the Cruyff turn. He had bags and bags of technical ability, but what made him stand out further was his genius soccer brain. If five of the best soccer brains had a meeting about soccer, Johan Cruyff would be the one organising it !
