Why do a Zenith Saint Petersburg soccer camp ?
Historically, Moscow teams have dominated Russian soccer, however Zenit Saint Petersburg have established themselves as contenders to the Russian capital teams, as well as establishing themselves as the best team outside of Moscow.
In recent years, Zenit have taken their soccer to the next step. In 2008, they won their first European trophy, the UEFA Cup, thanks to a 2-0 victory against Rangers in the final. They became only the second Russian team to have done so, and in the 2010s, Zenit won 5 out of 10 possible Russian Premier Leagues, further cementing their position in Russian soccer.
In 2005, the club was taken over by Gazprom, one of the biggest companies in the world. Gazprom invested heavily into the club, allowing for better coaches, players and sporting facilities. Zenit will be hoping to continue to build on this and to one day win the Champions League.
Zenith Saint Petersburg, a club with many famous names
Although Russian soccer is not the most prestigious in the world, thanks to Gazprom’s investment and money, several top class managers and players have joined the club. The Brazilian Hulk is such a player. Physically, Hulk is a monster, something that he couples with his technical ability to be a nightmare on the field.
Dick Advocaat is a legendary manager, who has taken charge of over 25 teams, so it was a big deal when he came to Zenit. In his first season, the club won their first league title since the Soviet Union. The best player during this period was undoubtedly Andriy Arshavin, one of Zenit’s best ever players. Nicknamed the Baby-faced Assassin, he had a knack for scoring in the most unexpected times.
