Although soccer was invented in England, it was in the Netherlands that the sport developed and gradually became a more modern soccer.
Indeed, “Total Football” has been greatly popularized in the Netherlands and in particular at Ajax Amsterdam, which won its 46 games playing with this style of play.
Total Football is a system of play in which all players can swap positions with their teammates during the game according to each other’s positions. This means that no outfield player has a fixed position as such.
This style of play doesn’t really exist anymore, but it laid the foundation for many aspects of soccer as we know it. It also demonstrates the ability of the Dutch to reinvent this incredible sport and the ability of coaches to instill strong principles in their players.
