Each university has a specific program with its own methodology, integrating training into the school curriculum.
The championship period is intense and players can have between 1 and 3 training sessions a day. There are generally 5 training days a week. Recovery sessions are integrated into the program so that players can keep up with the pace of the season.

Why do American universities offer sports scholarships to players ?
Sports scholarships are a central part of the educational system in the United States. Every year, thousands of students and athletes benefit from the opportunity to obtain a sports scholarship in order to finance their studies while pursuing their passion for their sport. A system that is unknown in Europe, but which is a key element in the greatness of sport in the USA. There are several reasons for this unique system.
An engine of prestige and visibility.
All American universities regard sport as a key element in their reputation. In soccer, it’s the NCAA that organizes the championship and attracts thousands of spectators every weekend on TV or in the stadiums. So it’s only logical that universities want to have competitive, high-performance teams to shine on the national stage. The more the teams shine, the more attractive the university will be to students, sponsors and donors.
What’s more, having high-performance teams creates a strong sense of belonging among alumni, who will in turn support the university financially during their professional careers.
A significant source of income
It’s worth noting that major university teams generate substantial revenues. These range from television rights and ticket sales to sponsorship contracts and merchandising. This not only finances sporting activities, but also the university’s academic sector, enabling it to invest and stand out from the competition. It’s a virtuous circle that starts with sporting performance, and helps the university as a whole to grow.
Offering sports scholarships is therefore an important strategic investment for American universities. Talented players will improve performance and that will increase revenue. It’s as simple as that.
A lever for promoting excellence and diversity
Scholarships enable students from all walks of life to attend universities that are initially inaccessible because they are too far away geographically or too expensive. Sports scholarships will give talented players from modest backgrounds the opportunity to attend universities all over the country, giving them the chance of a brighter future.
What’s more, this mix encourages cultural exchange within the universities and creates an inclusive environment.
Last but not least, athletic scholarships highlight a principle dear to Americans: meritocracy. They recognize the efforts of students who have excelled on the field while maintaining good academic results.
A springboard to a professional career
American universities are the training centers of professional MLS teams, if we’re talking about soccer. They enable players to develop at a high level and prepare for the professional world. The best university players go through the draft system to join a professional team. The other students will have received top-level academic training and will have diplomas recognized the world over, enabling them to launch their professional lives in the best possible way.
Scholarship in soccer : How is college soccer organized in the United States ?
College soccer is a major element in the development of sport in the United States. However, soccer is organized in a completely different way to France.
University leagues and divisions
Soccer is regulated by various national organizations, one of which dominates all others: the NCAA.
- The NCAA is the most important organization and is divided into 3 divisions. Division 1 represents the most competitive universities with the best players and facilities. Division 2, less publicized than Division 1, offers an excellent level of soccer with a good academic balance. Division 3 focuses on the academic experience, with a significant but lower level of sporting commitment.
- The NAIA, which is a smaller organization than the NCAA, also offers high-level competitions with a more personalized approach for players and students.
- The NJCAA is made up of junior colleges, corresponding to the first 2 years of university. This is generally the gateway to the NCAA or NAIA.
A season’s soccer schedule in sport study USA
Soccer in the United States follows a very precise schedule:
- August is pre-season time. Teams begin intensive training to prepare for the regular season.
- From September to November, the regular season takes place. Teams play matches against teams from their own conference or non-conference to establish a final standings at the end of the regular season.
- From November to December, it’s time for the Play-Offs. The top-ranked teams compete in Play-Offs, conference finals and the national final.
- From January to August is the off-season. Players concentrate on their studies and sometimes take part in summer tournaments.
High-level training and infrastructure
As explained above, American universities invest massively in their sports infrastructure to attract the best players. Players benefit from facilities worthy of the biggest European soccer clubs. Campuses often feature several state-of-the-art soccer pitches, sports halls, swimming pools, gyms, cold baths, etc. Travel is easy, and some universities even have their own private planes for long journeys.
During the high season, players can have up to 3 training sessions a day, with only one day off a week. Whereas in France, there’s only one match a week, it’s normal to have 2 matches a week at university, as the season is very dense and concentrated over time.
Competitions: a showcase for recruiters
Having a university scholarship and the opportunity to experience this adventure also gives you a chance to become a professional soccer player in the United States. Indeed, university competitions are closely watched by scouts from professional leagues, particularly MLS. Every year, many players are scouted and sent to events such as the MLS SuperDraft, which brings together the country’s best university players and scouts from the biggest clubs.
