How to Become a Professional Footballer Without an Academy
Let’s clear something up right away: not every pro comes through an academy. Plenty of players who made it to the Premier League or the England national team took a different road: Jamie Vardy was still playing non-league football at 25, and Chris Smalling came through non-league Maidstone United.
So if you (or your child) weren’t spotted at 10 years old, the dream isn’t over. It just needs a plan. And without an academy, there are two realistic pathways, depending on age:
- Ages 11-17: a football boarding school
- Ages 18-23: university football in the USA, with a scholarship
At Looking For Soccer, that’s exactly what we do: we help young players and their families build their football project, choose the right pathway and avoid the traps along the way. No false promises, just honest advice and real support.
In short
- 11-17 years old: a 10-month football boarding school, combining high-level training and school.
- 18-23 years old: a football scholarship in a US university, to play, study and stay in the game.
- At any age: work on your body and your mindset, and stay away from fake agents.

The honest truth: very few players go pro, academy or not
In England, the classic route goes through Premier League and EFL academies. Even there, only a small share of players end up signing a pro contract. Talent matters, but so do timing, mindset, injuries and luck.
That’s why we like to say it plainly: our job isn’t to sell you a dream. It’s to look at a player’s real profile and find the pathway where they can keep progressing, get an education and keep every door open. If the pro career happens, great. If it doesn’t, the player still comes out ahead.
Ages 11-17: a football boarding school
A football boarding school is the closest thing to an academy, minus the selection at age 10. Players live on campus for a full season, train daily with qualified coaches and keep up with school at the same time.
It’s a great fit for a teenager who:
- loves the game and wants to train every day,
- has never been picked up by a pro academy,
- wants to grow, on and off the pitch, in a structured environment.
Looking For Soccer works with selected programmemes in 4 countries, and we help you pick the one that matches your child’s level, age and goals. Learn more about our football boarding school programmemes.

Ages 18-23: is it too late to go pro? No. University football in the USA
This is the question we hear the most: “I’m 19, did I miss my chance?” Short answer: no. In the USA, university football (known there as college soccer) is a real pathway to the pros, and many great players took it.
- Jay DeMerit played university football at the University of Illinois Chicago, then moved to England with no contract and played non-league football. A few years later, he was in the Premier League with Watford.
- Matt Turner played at Fairfield University, went undrafted, started his pro career in the USL, then became the U.S. national team goalkeeper and signed with Arsenal.
- Daryl Dike played at the University of Virginia, was drafted by Orlando City, then moved to England with West Bromwich Albion.
- DeJuan Jones played at Michigan State before being drafted by the New England Revolution and becoming a regular MLS starter.
University football gives you four years to develop, play competitive matches in front of scouts and earn a degree. With a scholarship, it can also cost a lot less.
Thanks to our network of 500 American universities, Looking For Soccer helps players aged 18 to 23 find the right college, build their recruiting profile and handle the process from A to Z. Find out how to get a football scholarship in the USA.

What every aspiring pro needs, at any age
Whatever pathway you choose, a few things make the difference.
1. Build your athletic edge
Top players do extra work outside team training. If your club doesn’t have a strength and conditioning coach, a good personal trainer who knows football is a smart investment.
2. Train your mind
Bad games, time on the bench, injuries, trials that don’t go your way: it’s all part of the journey. A mental coach can help you stay confident and consistent when it gets tough.

3. Take care of your body
No smoking or vaping, little to no alcohol, good food, good sleep. Boring? Maybe. Non-negotiable? Definitely.
4. Get seen in the right places
Trials with competitive clubs, showcases, and holiday football camps where you can test your level against strong players and coaches who know the game.
5. Watch out for fake agents
The football world has its share of people selling dreams. Since 2023, agents must hold a FIFA licence and be listed in FIFA’s public register. Never pay upfront for vague promises, and always ask for references.
