Even there, only a small share of players end up signing a pro contract. In the USA, university football (known there as college soccer) is a real pathway to the pros, and many great players took it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jay DeMerit<\/strong> played university football at the University of Illinois Chicago, then moved to England with no contract and played non-league football.
